Hi! I’m Blakeley Hoffman Payne (she/her), a researcher, writer, and educational consultant thinking about the ethics and politics of technology. Currently, I am a doctoral student at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Particularly, my interests lie at the intersection of computer science, fat studies, and participatory design. My goal is to promote a fat justice agenda within technology by centering the experiences, needs, and desires of fat people in technology research and design.
Previously, I studied math and computer science at the University of South Carolina, and in 2020, I graduated from the MIT Media Lab with an M.S. in Media Arts and Sciences. While at MIT, my research focused on the ethics of artificial intelligence and how we might teach children to be conscientious consumers and designers of AI. My work in this area has been covered by outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, MIT Tech Review, and Quartz.
Beyond research, I also write, give talks, and consult on matters related to AI, ethics, and education.
